I read comics for their educational value. For example, I didn’t realize before that pirates carried shields. Also, this was early enough that the Angry Birds were still somewhat saurian.

It sure looks to me that Gingerbeard’s shield is actually a cheap charcoal grill. (Fun fact: grilled Magellanic Creeps taste like chicken!)

I love all the Gingerbeard strips but the sunscreen one is my favourite. In this one, I like how he has a little bluebird on his shoulder instead of a parrot. Also, few can draw indignance as well as Will Henry (viz., the seagull demanding his cut).

Whenever the panel changes to a fantastical image of whatever they’re talking about…I have to remind myself never to believe anything Wallace ever says, no matter how confidently he says it.

I swear I heard the seagull go I am Groot, but I could be wrong.

One question I’ve always had was: is Gingerbeard a real legend or completely made up?
