I read comics for their educational value. For example, I didn’t realize before that pirates carried shields. Also, this was early enough that the Angry Birds were still somewhat saurian.
Hopefully Spud and Rose don’t hear of this either, or else they might want a cut too, and counting the seagull, that means you’d have to find a way to split priceless five ways.
I love all the Gingerbeard strips but the sunscreen one is my favourite. In this one, I like how he has a little bluebird on his shoulder instead of a parrot. Also, few can draw indignance as well as Will Henry (viz., the seagull demanding his cut).
Whenever the panel changes to a fantastical image of whatever they’re talking about…I have to remind myself never to believe anything Wallace ever says, no matter how confidently he says it.

No that would be zero. Anything times zero is zero.

Nobody’s going to cut seagull out of his/her share of the loot.

Are those little green things Magellanites? They’re so thick you have to fight them off with a stick.

I wonder if Gingerbeard was one of Wallace’s ancestors.

I never thought I’d see the words “scurvy” and “creeps” in the same sentence.

Have we heard of Gingerbeard or the Magellanic Wars before? I hope we get more details. This looks like fine fodder for fan fiction.

I think Wallace is remembering something that’ll happen in the future. I can see it now…
Wallace the Brave: You fought in the Magellanic Wars?
Gingerbeard: Yes, I was once a space pirate the same as your father.

What is he fighting? Zombie Tribbles?

The seagull may not be good at math, but he knows it is a lot…..

It sure looks to me that Gingerbeard’s shield is actually a cheap charcoal grill. (Fun fact: grilled Magellanic Creeps taste like chicken!)

A little bit of rewording and careful editing and this would work:

“You see me now a veteran, of the Magellanic wars….”

I swear I heard the seagull go I am Groot, but I could be wrong.

One question I’ve always had was: is Gingerbeard a real legend or completely made up?
