Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake, baker man. Bake me a cake as fast as you can... Roll it, shape it and mark it with a Z, and put it in the oven for Zoe and me! Cake again? We need to find Zoe a new favorite nursery rhyme.
Back during medieval times and even later, people didn’t have ovens. There would be a community oven where you could have your bread baked. People would “mark” their bread so they would know which one was theirs when they came back to get it. That’s where that verse in the rhyme comes from.
