I hate to be a Monday morning quarterback, but . . . a Dutch door would have done the same thing, without modifying the wall, and drastically lower construction costs.
A Dutch door or a service window would be equally easy in a cartoon. All he would have to do is draw the door as he wanted it or draw the service window as he did. The only cost would be minimal ink and paper. If he uploaded the cartoon instead of printing it there would be no cost at all for either.
I once worked in a university where my office was on the ground floor with the window opening onto the courtyard. So staff would come up to my window to ask me questions, then catch themselves halfway through the question finding it a little weirds. I was going to start selling snacks at the window as a side gig.

Is this “service window comic day?” Drabble has a gag about them too.

Two windows. One for Borrows. One for Returns.

This Janet reminds me of Janet in “The Good Place.”
