My wife picked up a couple of collections of Gorey’s drawings many years ago, when she was studying in Philadelphia. I had never heard of him. Is he well known in the US, or is Georgia paying homage to one of her favourites?
Goldie is such a social butterfly. Truly the tone has never been more serious! Since it is April, perhaps the Children finally got sick of the Garfield Christmas special. Hide the Garfield phone before they remember.
If anyone wants one of those phones, you are going to need a time machine or to visit Brittany in France and do some beach combing. Or see if any are for sale on french Ebay. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/why-have-garfield-phones-been-washing-ashore-france-30-years-180971835/
Yes. Yes we are. We certainly are going to talk about the totally awesome Garfield phone which we all must have, today or preferably yesterday. But first, let’s talk about the double dose of toe beans!! Goldie toe beans and then extremely rare sighting of upside-down Tommy rear toe beans (ERSOUDTRTB, for future reference). The squeees can be heard all across the globe, even by those of us who, sadly, lack Garfield telephones.
I used to have one of those phones! It was my prize and joy for selling a bunch of jewelry through a program for my school. Also had the fastest redial on the planet for a long time, so you could quickly redial someone like a contest line if you needed to. I miss that thing!
Seriously? You against Garfield, Puck? Or do you feel he’s a sell out?
Speaking of Garfield, I really need to figure out if I can paint a suncatcher to bring it back to life. I’ve got what is now, sadly, an ancient Garfield suncatcher that I’ve had in windows for some 30+ years. Poor thing is looking sad, it’s once beautiful orange faded. I suppose, since it is metal framed, I could try removing the glass and replacing it with some of those glass beads or whatever they are that melt in the oven into the frame, but I really don’t want to try anything like that.
Wait! Is there actually a Garfield phone?!? Not that it matters now, since i don’t have a landline anymore. But I totally would have gotten one back in the day!
Wait a minute! – Wasn’t it just this past week that Bobby Rydel died? And this comic Today reminds us of ‘Bye, Bye, Birdie’ in which Rydell starred? And Georgia writes these as much as 3 weeks prior to their publishing? Wow! ……
Georgia on facebook with a photo of herself with pink hair and cradling the Garfield phone like a cat, ““Are we going to talk about the phone?” From today’s strip! In the ‘playing pretend’ aspect of writing the comic, I had to pause and think “ok, if the family is going out of town and taking their cellphones, what phone is left in the home?” Just one! Lol! A Christmas gift from the Man in 2019, this Garfield phone is curled up proudly on my desk in my studio. I love it so much.(Who remembers when I had pink hair for a bit? Lol!)”
Edward Gorey is one of my idols. When I was in high school my aunt and uncle gave my brother, then in grade school, a book of ghost stories illustrated by Gorey. I was hooked. One of my great moral triumphs was not stealing the book from him.
Features of the Garfield phone, plus and minus…Plus: Eyes moved up or down to open or closed positions when you lifted or set down the phone piece into the cradle; REALLY fast redial button; if you wanted to be really old fashioned you could flip a switch to “pulse” mode or leave it on Tone; it looked like Garfield.; You could play with the eyes of Garfield by hitting the manual black level and have a pretend conversation with him. Minus: The button on the phone piece could easily be pressed by your cheek or chin, ending a call, which happened on many occasions. ; it had a single hole for the microphone for the mouthpiece; it didn’t sell well and you can look up floating Garfield phones; it had a strange loud piercing ringtone – didn’t bother me as a kid, does bother me as an adult; the handset over time wouldn’t fit exactly into the cradle (spring in the eyes mechanism wearing out) so you would have to kind of push it to make sure it was in otherwise the phone company would send the “AH AH AH AH AH AH AH AH!” alarm through the line to indicate you failed to hang up your phone.

I seem to recall Puck being a Garfield fan, so maybe he thinks it’s his and is wondering why Goldie gets to use it.

It’s time for Lupin’s big to-do
Though Elvis feels bereft
But I’m still planning here
While you’re miles away
And he’s wondering why you left
And a bash will be raging
Through our big pink house tonight
We have good friends in rasslin’ circles
And they always make us smile
I spend my time
Thinking about moves
And it’s almost driving me wild
And it’s Tommy’s invite that’s breaking
Down this Garfield line tonight
I ain’t missing you at all
Since you’ve been gone away
I ain’t missing you
No matter
What Elvis might say
No, I ain’t missing you
Since you’ve been gone away
You know, since it’s
Been less than one day
