CAPTCHA – Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. Now, you’re on your own to go down that rabbit hole and discover what a Turing test is. (I found it interesting.)
Image based CAPTCHA grids were modified, when it was realized that visual recognition software could quickly select the appropriate boxes. Slightly distorted pictures are still recognizable to humans, but quite difficult for computers. Similarly, the altered characters of a text-based CAPTCHAs are decipherable by humans, while beyond the abilities of most programs. The few seconds it takes for a live user to respond also comes into play. If the security system gets a very fast answer, it is assumed to be from another computer, and is rejected.

Is that a squirrel, or is it a chipmunk?
They’re all just fuzz-tailed rats.

I have always enjoyed that “captcha” sounds like “capture”.

The conundrum of the modern age. I am not a robot. But I’d rather be a dog.
