Oh snap. I had NO IDEA Becky went back to April’s toddler-times. Lynn set this in motion REALLY early- no more “Tracey as part of the gang we just never saw until now”, lol.
Kids have their own hierarchy, rules and justice system. The big people are to be obeyed and avoided whenever possible, but kids know who is nice and who is mean and learn how to deal with people their own size.
From the FBOFW website: Lynn’s Comments: Becky is a character who stays through to the end. At the time, I didn’t know that she and April would become friends for a lifetime.
The last panel reminded me of The Many Saints of Newark, specifically where Dickie Moltisanti shows off his new baby boy, and everyone plays “pass the baby”. The baby is quiet, but then starts bawling when getting near a teenage Anthony Soprano.
Tony Soprano: “Hey, Christopher, what is wrong? I am your cousin Tony! I don’t know why, but he gets this way every time I am near.”
Tony’s Grandmother: “Babies have a sense of knowing what will happen to them, a sense we mature, sentient adults do not know.”
This reminds me about my own time at day care. I made a “life long” friend there also, until age eleven when we moved really far away, and then we wrote letters to each other until about our mid-forties, (remember the days when long distance was still costly, and it was way before cell phone became a thing)…I wondered what happened, and finally I found out that she died of an illness. Her family sent me her obituary.
I was a briedesmaid in her wedding, and she was in mine too. So we did see each other as years passed, but our letter communication was the one that carried that friendship.

this the same Becky who — if I recall — later became part of April’s middle or high school band?

Cartoon children do not actually communicate through telepathy. They are much more likely to share a thought bubble.

Everybody meet Becky McGuire. She will remain April’s best friend until high school.

Ah. That’s how Becky came to be. I didn’t remember this the first time. Did not realize they met that far back.

I wonder: at this age, do boys and girls play together nicely, or is there already a “battle of the sexes”?

The look on those kids faces says, “Who’s that kid? I thought I was the only little kid around.”

Major character introduction.
April realized what was important in life as a teen, whenBecky’s “teen idol” career overwhelmed her and April was glad she was “a normal kid”.
