Though I’ve never been married (can’t imagine why not, of course), I’ve run into a similar problem. My solution is to tilt my head to left or right (depending on my politics at the moment) and pour Liquid Plumber in the upper ear. After a few moments, it emerges from the lower ear with whatever gunk was clogging the works, thus clearing both ears and whatever lies between them simultaneously.
