Whoever determines the correct us of words, has decreed that further and farther are interchangeable. I will continue to use ‘further’ when meaning ‘that something is in addition’, and ‘farther’ when ‘a greater distance.’

I wondered why Opal’s cat was paying so much attention to Earl. I thought maybe he’d gotten into the catnip!

Wait until you take your sweater off, Earl! You may have one made of cat hair on it! (From experience my cat Toki)!

He’s right about farther. Further is for everything besides distance such as Donald went further than Joe to stop illegal immigrants. Earl should’ve said farther both times.

“Further” can mean a male cat that has sired kittens – a Fur Father.

Muffin is like a lot of cats that immediately hang around people who don’t like cats, which Earl is one of. I’m surprised Earl doesn’t shoo the cat off him.

It’s easy to remember. Farther is in the distance domain, further is in the time domain. We’ll drive a bit farther and then have further discussions about where we’ll stay.

I asked my father. “Is it further or farther, father?” He just looked at me blankly.

When I was in training to be a docent at the Bronx Zoo, another trainee said she understood “precocial” (animals that were ready to go on day one, like horses) and “altricial” (animals that needed nurturing, like tigers). “Precocial”, she reasoned, had the same word root as “precocious”, ready early. And “Altricial” was from “altruistic” ~ the parents would help others.

It’s a good memory device, but she was completely wrong.

No Deadheads in the Pickles community apparently. I expected some comments about Bob and Phil’s band Further.

Farther is distance and further is time. As in; I will, without further delay, get farther away from this furball.

He has the right idea though. Farther and further were correct, except for the cat.
