Looks like a bucket. Dictionary says that a kettle has a lid and spout. So, not a fine kettle of fish in any sense.
And before the cleanup there was a mess of fish.
I’ve never looked into the history of the phrase, but I’m wondering if “a fine kettle of fish” has anything to do with jugging kippers?
But does he have other fish to fry?
