1937—-New York Yankees.Tommy Heinrich(OLD RELIABLE) iscalled up to the team in midseason, and eventually finds out why.
This was when teams played exhibition games on their “days off”for extra cash.Joe McCarthy,no-nonsense type;Yankee manager.
The Yankees lost an exhibition game, and an outfielder named Roy Johnson says—“Jeez, this guy McCarthy wants to win every game!”The next day,the Yankees had an opening for an outfielder.
I know it was Johnson, because I looked up the 1937 Yankees and they only made 2 or 3 roster changes all season.
The old-timers told me the same thing when I tried to get a job at a recycling plant. “Nobody lasts more than a week in your position”. But I showed them by lasting TWO weeks on the job.
And that is one of the big problems with the NCAA sports setup. The players are so loaded with practice and games that the degrees they get, a lot of times, aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. If they don’t make it into the pros, some of them are basically lost in the real world. Colleges should have to pay for them to play, or guarantee that they will get a quality degree, and actually learn it, while in college.

With the USFL back in business, as well as the CFL, he should catch on somewhere. Unless he’s completely useless at his position.
