Hey Cosmo Newton took an apple to his bean to discover gravity and all he got in return was a cookie named after himself, so let’s give credit where credit is due.
It wasn’t/isn’t so much the pause in mid air but it was usually a look toward the ‘camera’ with those sad Coyote eyes, perhaps a resigned “Pshaw” just before the zip out the bottom of the frame, followed by the cute little PFFF cloud of dust at the bottom. The short pause in the sound of falling before made it giggle-worthy.
Wile E. Coyote would have liked to have a Flying Squirrel Suit. But then again, he would naturally crash when trying to use it (RIP Dean Potter, killed the same way).

It’s understandable, Wile E. Coyote never studied Law.

Cosmo should’ve told Skylar that the coyote was a SUUUUPER Genius.

Bit of trivia/inside joke: Acme was the name of the animation pegs they used to keep the cels straight.

And kids, a few years after that the world was switched from black & white to color. That’s why all those old movies and TV shows are in B&W.

He also discovered Inertia. He kind of ran into it (and fell into it).

Guess the citizens of ‘Treetops’ have never heard of Sir Isaac Newton.

Actually, that’s when quantum gravity was discovered: gravity that comes into existence when an observation is made.

Remember, the secret to flying is to fall, but to forget to hit the ground.

Newton “discovered” gravity, like other Europeans "discovered"The Americas.

Reminds me of Bugs Bunny tutoring his nephew in American history with less than accurate stories.
