I studied Spanish all through high school, in college, and took a conversational Spanish class from a native speaker a few years later. Today, from disuse, I have what I call “mañana Spanish”. I remember the next day what I should have said the day before.
At a party where one Spanish speaking child was invited, I was asked to tell her to call her mother. I realized the next day that I had asked her to “call herself her mother”. She had looked at me strangely but that is pretty much what little girls do. :)

Sitting in a cafe in New Braunfels Texas circa 1965, Latino laborer greets the waitress in German and she replied in Spanish. Good old days.
