I particularly love that Red has “Higgins Boat” on his wagon. Most appropriate for this day. We should always remember June 6, 1944, the beginning of the liberation of Europe from the Nazis.
I’ve watched hours of video of Ukrainian refugees fleeing not just bombs and bullets but dictatorship. Of course these people are fleeing to save their lives, but I have been impressed by how many of them take their dogs and cats (and in one case, even a turtle). This shows me it isn’t just THEIR lives, but LIFE in general, as opposed to the dictator’s casual doling out of mass death.
I thought today’s strip seemed familiar and I see that it is a repeat from 2019. Sadly, little has changed since World War II. There is still plenty of war and oppression in the world. Fortunately, there has been far less war in Europe since World War II and much less oppression since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989-90.
THREE CHEERS for Red and Rover – they never disappoint! Too bad so many have forgotten. D Day 1944 was very exciting. Where we lived – no one had any electricity or telephones – so some farmers rode from farm to farm with the news. (didn’t drive – gas was being rationed – so they rode on horses.) My sister had just been born, so my mother was still in the maternity home. The lady at the Cream station had a wind charger, so she had electricity and an electric radio – so people started arriving and began to sit around in the Cream station, listening to the news. My Dad walked with me, from the Maternity Home to the Cream Station, so he could listen to the news on the radio. The daughter of the lady at the cream station took all the kids out on the front porch and kept us busy doing stuff like playing ring toss and coloring. It was sort of like a big impromptu party in the middle of the day.
My dad was in special forces who liberated the Jews in the camps…he couldn’t talk about it but he did say the sights, sounds and smells were horrific. =~{
And what Neo-Nazis would that be? If your referring to the current administration, I would call them more Neo-Socialist. And since they are currently in control of all branches of government, they are the only ones we can get liberated from.
A little over 20 yrs ago, I was in Berlin on business. The museum there had three floors of interesting stuff and an exhibit about WWI and WWII. Both were only the length of a hallway. Many if not all Germans do not consider the Nazis regime as part of their history. It was more like a movement of soldiers led by Hitler. At least that was my takeaway from that trip.
My godmother’s husband was killed on Normandy and is buried in one of the French cemeteries there. One of my most precious possessions is a rosary he sent from France.

It’s very rare to see Rover so somber. He understands the gravity of the day.

Today’s D-Day themed strip is also an excellent tie-in with last Monday’s Memorial Day strip.
