My dog and I walk every day at dawn, come rain, snow, ice, heat, sleet, hail. We might shorten our walk for extreme weather, but we walk until we are done. Today was 3 miles. I find that she will go out in any weather as long as I go with her. The only time she won’t go is when the people living behind me set off their illegal, professional level fireworks so that it seems like we are under siege. She is a champion hunting dog, so not scared of a shotgun or two. She even still gets spooked when I take her a mile away at the hospital for her therapy dog work to get away from the fireworks. Starting last year, we spend the evening of July 4 in the hospital until about 1a. a neighbor will call me when it’s safe to return home. Our city has laws about when fireworks can be set off and which days and all, and it was much worse before the laws were passed. They must spend thousands of dollars on the fireworks, just to have the joy of blowing things up.

There are times you just need a dog. Not just the dog needing you.

If you don’t take him for a walk, there might be more in your bed tonight than just the dog.

I once read of a man in the Cotswold Hills who took his pack of hounds on a 16 mile walk every day. He knew and called each dog by name.
