It’s usually a fan that has developed some odd bearing noise that does this to me. The most insidious wait several minutes before the start up – just after you have fallen asleep. You bang on it, oil it and try to go back to sleep but there it is again. :)

If you want to prevent this from happening in the future, you may have to reverse the direction of the fan.
