Our ancestors are no longer our peers. They have disa-peered. We ourselves take comfort in their memories through traditions. The dead do not send messages; we only dream they do. This reminds me of the Franz Kafka short story that is a parable in this regard, “The Imperial Message,” that ends —
“… No one pushes his way through here, certainly not someone with a message from a dead man. But you sit at your window and dream of that message when evening comes.”
Oh, man! this is definitely a keeper. . .here’s a P. S.: “I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones.” —John Cage
Traditions are useful excuses to eat salty and fatty foods without guilt. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Then there is the traditional drinking to excess. Got to love those dead people.
Bible – Mark 7:13: You void the word of God by your traditions/customs that you have handed down. (many traditions/customs in Churches today are more “powerful” than word of God.

Traditionally, on the first of the year, I jump off the pier to see if the water is cold.

It’s a good thing that some traditions like human sacrifice to appease the gods, have gone out of fashion.

Traditions are fine, they keep us connected to our history. It is when keeping tradition becomes rigidly consuming that it is a problem.
