I don’t laugh when they fall. I just go to work on them.

The joggers might be running from muggers in the park. Or, they might be, some of them, muggers running from Aunty Acid. Her reputation precedes her.

“Research shows …” It’s just a fancy way of saying “They say …” or “I’ve heard …” or “Everybody knows …”

It is amazing how many people accept sentences that start with these words as fact.
