“Aunty Acid” is not real, but I had my own aunt like her in spirit at least, if not in exact circumstances. The reasons for that are complicated and unnecessary to explain here. But although she seemed sweet and pretty in an overdone way, she was sharp and cynical and bitter, like angry candy.
Who as a child can understand adults like that? I my naive way, I wanted to somehow make her happy, but she was a seeming brick wall. There was a song currently on radio at the time, and I thought of her when I heard it, “*Make Someone Happy*” —
.
Make someone happy
Make just one someone happy
Make just one heart the heart you sing to
.
One smile that cheers you
One face that lights when it nears you
One gal you’re everything to
.
Fame, if you win it
Comes and goes in a minute
Where’s the real stuff in life to cling to?
.
Love is the answer
Someone to love is the answer
Once you’ve found her
Build your world around her
.
Make someone happy
Make just one someone happy
And you will be happy too
.
Songwriters: Jule Styne / Adolph Green / Betty Comden
Sadly, no one has the power to make someone happy. That is something within their control, not yours. Trust me, I tried desperately in one circumstance, to no avail. It’s like pouring water into a bucket that has no bottom.
I agree with Aunty, there are way too many jerks out there who go out of their way to be one and seemingly feel good about their nonsense afterwards. While there are many things which could be said, I’ll leave it as T-Shirt I saw emblazoned with the caption, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
I have for several years carried little business cards that I made. On the front is says, “A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple.” On the back it says, “If life should ever present you with a similar opportunity, please care for another.”
I have paid for meals and other things for individuals and have left one of those cards with the waitress or cashier to give to the person, as well as giving them to people who I have helped on the side of the road, or wherever they may have been in need and I could assist. It’s not much, but it’s better than doing nothing.
Hooboy!!! This one could open the doors to political discussion that would be enduringly painful. So i will opt to just say…POWER to the people, Aunty!

My life mission is simple: make a positive difference in other people’s lives. Sometimes, all I can do is make them smile.

In the Bible: “Do not hold back the doing of good for someone if it is within your power to do.”

what you have to admire about auntie is her ability to never offer an uplifting thought without garnishing it with a bit of nastiness…
