I had a little Nature’s Creatures moment yesterday: I was taking the back roads home when I saw a newborn fawn and her mother in the road. The fawn was all curled up having a nap in the middle of the road while the mother was bending down to lick or nuzzle it.
I stopped and the fawn looked up at me with biiiiig eyes, wondering what I was. I moved a little closer, and it got up, rather unsteadily and walked to the edge of the road.
Once it got off the blacktop, I had a sigh of relief, and realized it was probably just a few hours old. A day at the most.
I’m afraid I tooted the horn to startle it. Just so it will learn that streets and cars are not good places to be for a fawn or even a full grown deer. I felt guilty startling the poor thing, but I hope it will remember.

I see way too many dead animals on the roads.
I hope that little one is off to a good start.

The crow and the Fox, a classical poem in French young kids used to learn at school. I can still recite it half a century later.

The next panel would show the stick slipping through his paw with the bird swooping down to get it.
