It was just starting up back then – we used to see the PSAs on TV about it.
We lost two huge American Elms at the end of our driveway back in 1973 to Dutch Elm Disease. The neighbors up and down the street had all lost their elms by 1976. I can remember the smell of those big old elms being cut up and hauled away.
Today’s strip reminds me of a parody of MacBeth written by one of my friends at high school. One of the men dressed as a tree got Dutch Elm Disease in that version. Another was used as the battering ram.

Yes, and in the “new” strip of today, Sir Rodney obviously has removed his disguise – makes sense, in a comix way.

He was cured by Dr. Pol, who then became The Incredible Dr. Pol!

I hope what he has isn’t catching. Gwen might not appreciate contracting a communicable disease.
