    OK, I admit it. Walking 4 miles a day is a bit obsessive. However, doing half that or even less (say 1.5 miles) yields a lot of benefits besides building a strong heart.

    Pick a comfortable pace: one you like and can sustain. If you push yourself too hard, you won’t like it and you won’t do it.

    You may or may not lose weight. Even scientists disagree. But what you have will be firmer.

    In addition to strengthening heart muscle, walking increases blood circulation to all the organs. For example skin and hair (I still have all mine and it is still mostly brown), the liver (AKA the body’s recycling center), the brain (it uses 25% of the air you breathe), and for those of you on Viagra, I’ll let you figure that one out.

    It develops collateral circulation, so if you have a blockage anywhere, it is less likely to cause trouble.

    Also, if you do need an operation, a good cardio vascular system will make it go better and you will recover more rapidly. Yogi Berra never said this, but he could have, “The best time to get sick is when you are healthy.” All it takes is about a half hour, most days of the week.

    Walking outside in the winter in a cold climate is a real challenge. Walking in very cold weather can be an elevated cardio workout. For me, I would prefer a warmer climate and to just walk farther. Our nasty part of the winter is coming later than usual this year, but I bet we really suffer for it soon, and quite possibly summer will be late, too.
