They arent paying him, they’re giving him gifts. This is to show their appreciation. Yes, you’re going to say that it’s his job and he is well paid for it. But they’ve become friends with him and at this time of the year it is customary to give small gifts to people such as the postman, the newspaper delivery boy, the hairdresser. I betcha within a week or two you’ll see Hi and Lois giving something to their trashman, it happens every year. Welcome to middle America. Where did you say you were from?

I’ve never heard of anyone paying the postman for Christmas…well except in third world countries because otherwise he’ll steal your mail.
