I wonder why she refused his proposal… she hasn’t been happy since.

No, because that wouldn’t explain why she hasn’t been happy since.

Yeah she’s in love. The heart doesn’t care that he’s a lazy no account bum.

Plus he certainly wasn’t a bum at the Savoy.

Love is blind. Anyway, he does have good qualities and he is good to her.

The worst marriage proposal I’ve ever heard of: “Honey, I’m thinking about getting a housekeeper.”

“He is good to her”– you may have explained her unhappiness at having refused him right there, Stringmuse. I still feel there’s something in her past that has made her pull back.

I’ll bet there’s a surprise resolution coming. Maybe Earl really is rich. Maybe poor old Walt will die and Gertie will have to move on.

I’m intrigued by both the OldManMountain and Jazzlily comments. I too have had the thought that Walt might be leaving us– given his age. And I do wonder about Gertie’s history, though the possibility of past mistreatment hadn’t occurred to me, Jazzlily. I think Gertie is a widow.
