Dryer broke a few months ago and we had to use the laundromat until I fixed it. We took the dirty clothes and a load of quarters to the laundromat and found that all the machines only accepted a debit-like card that you had to “load” with your credit card…
Last time I used a public laundry was in the 1980s. I used to go to one across the street from our apartment. What caused me to stop using it was I took the clothes out of the dryer – over half of our clothing as I did the laundry every week – and someone had left a lipstick in the dryer. Over half of our clothes were ruined with red lipstick melted into them! Use at own risk so lost them all. We both wear hard to find sizes (I am 5’1" tall and he is not much taller) and had to find and pay for a lot of new clothes that we had not planned to buy.
We bought a small (works from the kitchen sink) washer and smaller (no venting needed – shoots hot air out the front) dryer and, despite not being allowed to use them in our apartment did so. After we bought our house – dryer used to heat detached garage workshop and washer used when the one which came with house died until we could buy a new one – both now in basement.
When travel in summer I do laundry by hand in the bathroom sink as I will not go to a public laundry.

All the coins that are older than me are silver. The U.S. stopped issuing silver coins in 1964 I was 10 years old.

I would hope the plugger would have his own washing machine and dryer.

Luckily my apartment unit has its own laundry facilities within; property doesn’t have enough space for a communal (coin-operated) laundromat.
