I wonder how Agnes and Wallace would get along. They both have days filled with nonsense, just wildly different kinds at times. Spud and Trout might get along ok.

Being a person who is terrified of heights, and shares Agnes’ fear of diving, I don’t want to imagine being lassoed on a high board.

Yes, it’s “only” a comic, and maybe it’s just a humorous line with no actual context… but I can’t help wondering:

Was she roped from the top step, and pulled back so she could climb down?

Or was she roped from the ground, and yanked off the board, falling into the water? That could drown her before she was pulled out.

Either way, IRL it would be dreadful…. even more shocking and traumatic in the 2nd case.

If it were me I’d probably have a heart attack!

Probably a few years ago, I shared my high dive story here on Agnes.

About 12 years old, I’d been told to climb it, when I didn’t want to.

Once before, I had climbed up to the top, but couldn’t make myself walk out onto the board.

I was told to back down the ladder… but people were coming up behind me, so everybody had to.

Most of them were nice, but a few grumbled… and I heard at least one person booing.

The next time, I managed to walk out to the end, eyes half shut, and heart pounding, trying not to look down…

Then, like Agnes, I froze…. though only for a few minutes, not two hours.

While I hesitated, being shouted at from below to jump, a woman who’d apparently been behind me on the ladder ran out to the end and pushed me off. I remember her laughter.

I was so startled I didn’t maintain any sort of diving pose that I remember.

I sort of recall tumbling down… I’m pretty sure my mouth was open, and I went in feet first, arms flailing, with a mouthful of water, too body-shocked to remember how to swim.

The lifeguard rescued me, or I would have drowned.

I was mortified, and refused to ever go back to that pool.

And I’ve never again climbed a high dive, though I did learn to dive (a bit) off lower boards.

You got one up on Agnes. You may not have conquered the high dive but you have the Confidence for the lower diving boards.

Some people may not have noticed that you were on the board that long, Agnes. But it would be hard to miss the crowd of people around it.
