I dunno, ask the countless kids who have molested by priests how they feel about never seeing justice done and these monsters imprisoned. And the Vatican is just dandy with that.
People won’t change. Institutions might, given “better” people in charge. Move ahead, eyes open, but don’t forget. If they get better, so might the world.
While I’ve had no dealings with the Catholic church, I’ve heard many comedians riff on the brutal treatment, George Carlin for one, in Catholic schools. Natives sent to boarding schools (residential is effectively the same, just now a trigger word), building and maintaining schools on each small scattered reserve would be costly. And cost is probably why the government (I’m Canadian) chose to delegate the task to a religious order, who would then be eager for more congregation.Crimes committed during this time should be investigated as a crime. It was first brought up in the 80’s and then PM Mulroney wanted that (and more were still alive) but the Chiefs said no. It’s about the money.
As a catholic it hard for me to say I am sorry thinking that its all okay for the victims. The priests that committed these crimes still working as so call a man of god makes me ill! They should be in jail and defrocked and banned from the church. Even as a probation officer, I often felt that I am sorry rang hollow for me when my clients said it!

While every large organization has its problems, most don’t claim God as the CEO.

Oh come on! What did the Church ever do to the native Mexican population, oh right, never mind. I’ll get my hat.
