To confess, I have never understood this part of the “cat lore” in Western comics! I have had cats at home for over 40 years. We still have 7 (sometimes 8!) cats – none of them, not even the semi-feral one – has shown a propensity to raid the trash bin. Yes, I have seen cats behind restaurants and inside markets – but not necessarily in dumpsters.
I used to run a salt mine in Cleveland, OH. We shipped a lot of our salt by lake boat, 20,000 tons per load. We kept several cats on staff to take care of the rats and other vermin that come with a working dock. We also raised / hosted a clutch of baby Swans under our dock each year. No, the cats didn’t get the cygnets.
