Man is destroying Planet Earth! Period! Here’s an idea!!! Teach in elementary school, parents take responsibility and teach their kids responsibility! Not only for the planet but life! In general. Manners, respect, responsibility, love, compassion, etc. Isn’t this what being a parent means? Seems a good % are slackers!
This world is in turmoil and some don’t give a rats @$$!
The solution, in theory, is pretty simple – follow the old mantra of “reduce, reuse, recycle.” However, there are two big problems with that. First, far too people bother with any of the three. Second, the vast majority of people who do any part of that only really bother with the least useful of the three – recycle. The most important of all is to reduce – not only to buy less crap that isn’t pre-owned, but also to do everything that you can to avoid excess packaging. To a certain degree we have little control over packaging, but how often do you see somebody, say, buy fresh produce without putting it in a previously unused produce bag? Is there any reason that you need to put a few apples in a bag at all? If you do need or insist on using a bag, how difficult is it to bring the bags that you used the last time and reuse them?
The biggest obstacle to reduce and reuse is the major corporations that do everything that they can to convince people to always pursue more, more, more and to fight against any regulations that might prompt people to consume less. But collectively we are not powerless against the corporations. The only thing that corporations care about is profits; if enough people “voted with their wallets” and consumed in a responsible manner, corporations would reform as necessary to remain profitable. Defunding and boycotts forced the end of apartheid in South Africa and the end of discriminatory seating requirements in Montgomery buses. If people had refused to buy cotton from slave-run plantations, we could have ended slavery in this country without a civil war. We can force corporations to do the right thing if we all simply put our money where our mouths are.

The only way of removing all the pollution is to remove the source and there certainly seems to be groups trying to achieve that.

It makes me laugh to see sharks covered in garbage. That’s what I’m supposed to say, right?
