As I understand it, “masterpiece” is a hold over from the days of apprenticeship. When you had learned all your master could teach, you created a “piece” to prove you were a master of your craft. That’s your “master piece”. You can still see some of the ones from woodworking masters in collections. Awesome work!
I have a 14 year old teen who likes to hang with me. He played chess with me on the set I built (go to heckydiddledolls.com to see it), and he critiqued the artwork, in a truthful and honest manner – said the black lion looked like it was drooling a little, the white lion looked great, a couple of the cheetahs (knights) looked a little like giraffes, and the kittens were adorable! He also added that to paint on a circular tube must be difficult, especially the learning curve. He starts algebra this year, and I gave him a book Geek Logic. How to answer life’s most difficult questions with an algebraic equation. Had to explain what the subscripts were for some of the variables (name) and he went to town! Not bad fro someone who never took algebra!
