I’ve been a lifelong fan of Doonesbury, but as a son of parents who both spent their last years in a haze of dementia, I never found this (old) story arc particularly funny or sensitive.
The nursing homes I worked at all had alarms on the doors for the wandering residents. (Locking the doors was against fire regulations). The confused person would often be quite upset at being stopped and walked back to their room. I started asking them where it was they were trying to go. A very high percentage of the women said they were going to take care of children (and were distraught because they couldn’t find the kids), and the men said they were going to work, and were quite worried about being late. It was heartbreaking.

Trudeau is a cartoonist who makes it a rule to be up to the times. This strip shows it with how “beloved” is wandering in mind and body.

There was a time when the homeless population was majority people with mental illness of some sort that could not get help.
Nowadays, it’s starting to be mostly people (sometimes families) who still have jobs but can’t afford to live where they work.

There’s communities that’s gated & designed for wanderers..at dusk or severely inclement weather, they’re walked home.

If it happened to me, I’d want to wear a tag that says, “My address is --” like an errant pet. Better than letting people look in my wallet.
