Not arguing with the basic premise of the strip, but I don’t think not being able to name a lot of Latino foods in and of itself automatically makes him a racist. If you can’t name a lot of Jewish dishes, does that make you an anti-Semite?
According to NPR, the variety of dishes featured was broader than just tacos and tamales. But that’s not the point.
The whole DC covers thing is a PR stunt. Run by the PR department. Who in looking at Latino culture/history etc, decided that food would be the safest, least sh!t stirring aspect to highlight. Which predictably, went over like a lead balloon, as the PR dept still doesn’t realize that stinking of inauthenticity is death.
Taco Bell is about the language – not the food. Many years ago, when I worked for them, I found they were putting soy “extenders” in the beef for the “Bell Burger”. I called the D.A. who sent someone out for samples. A few months later, new signage came down from headquarters. While a Bell “Burger”, by law, had to be made with 100% beef, a “Bell Beefer” did not.
I have taco trucks and carryout Mexican joints near me. I like asking them for “$20 worth of food that you would serve your family”. I get all kinds of interesting stuff.

Calling him a racist is easier than actually engaging in a productive discussion and educating him.
