How many times do you think we’ll see a drawing of the Diet Smith building in this story arc?

Fyi, the bottom of my new avatar says “Christmas leftover sandwiches”.

Ludwig, good question. I’m in a betting mood today, so I say five more times. I also think we will see Diet’s cell phone-remote control at least ten more times.

Why are all the buildings in Naperville begining to look so much alike ? That’s where Lizz is Chief of Police, isn’t it? Think back to Police HQ(IO-22&5-12-08), then, there’s the Genesis Building(10-07-08), and now Diet Smith Industries. You’d think there was only one architect in town !(?) Diet’s building has lost some height and it’s circular driveway out front which it once enjoyed (see 8-26-08). Now with that gone, the roadway is flush up to the building with shubbery similar to the other buildings while the”Diet Smith Enterprises” sign is now(12-19-08)up on the roof, not on the driveway(as at 8-26-08). Yes, it seems the J Hennessey Tucker’s highway development must have taken it’s toll on the Smith enviroment. It’s small potatoes, but when did the name change from ‘Industries’ to ‘Enterprises’? It’s these careless changes that jar us while the Author in cavalier fashion, seems blithly unaware of the slipshod flaws and ommissions. Unimportant? They reflect a lack of “focus” here, a minus that the Author brings to modern day Dick Tracy. Now C.I.A. again? Another mystery? Washington DC? The last one with all these factors, The Baron story was a minefield of errors! But Jeff has kindly warned us of possible time stress and inner conflicts! Pax Vobiscum

Vincent Massi said: “Two plot advancements in two days. Folks I think Locher is reading these comments”. I’m sure he is, but I wish I could be as optimistic as you are. I and many others have for several years, kindly suggested, right through the spectrum to sarcastic and rough comment. But this guy is like frigid Coca Cola “Zero”. He takes NO advice. Not even that of Chet Gould who knew what counted. Locher hears, but think his readers suggest squat. He believes HE knows it all. As his ‘disciple’ Mattie would say HE is already ‘informed’, whatever that may mean (?)

CELLPHONES ? Ahaa! Suspect DL got one for Christmas 2006, which seemed to set off a wave of use in the strip.Over a 13 month period after that, Tracy used his Wristgeene 3 times and a cellphone on 21 occasions. Lizz and Sam don’t seem to have one anymore. In the land of Locher(even for Diet) anything ‘different’ to the way it was done before is better.

Sydney Phillips says: “Locher hears, but think his readers suggest squat. He believes HE knows it all.”

REALLY? And, if you don’t mind my asking, what evidence do you have to base these comments on, Sydney? I don’t believe this to be true, as I have seen no evidence whatsoever to suggest such a thing. REALLY? Please share.

You know, Sydney, the timing of your comment is really uncanny. I was just thinking about the fact that Diet Smith has been with us now going into a second story arc.

I mentioned to DL very early in the Baskerville story that I “expected” to see him insert (ALL puns intended) Diet Smith to help resolve the security breach at HQ. He told me I would have to wait and see, but asked me what I liked most about the Diet character.

Of course, he didn’t bring in Diet to fix the systems, but we’ve had Diet with us ever since that story ended and it appears he will be “hogging” all the food at the Christmas table this year, too.

“Locher HEARS but think his readers suggest squat. HE believes HE knows it all.” Of course he does, dear Sydney. If that makes you sleep comfortably tonight…

Locher must be a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright’s archicture of the 50’s. Save for the Haunted House, virtually all of his buildings look like clones!

So first Diet was talking with Tess and now it’s some other guy from the CIA of all places?

The drawings are good today but if I see another panel of Diet holding the phone again I might have to scream.

Sadly, I’m prepping myself for at least another few weeks of Diet and the building drawings.

Love the Holiday Leftover Sandwich Avatar!

No, Morrow, they were not polite comments. Had he addressed me with any measure of politeness, I certainly wouldn’t have responded the way I did. I think you well know by now that I would much rather communicate respectfully with other posters here and elsewhere. I find that just doesn’t happen…ever.

Everybody reacts to me like I’m some kind of a threat as soon as I post any comment here on any matter. It sucks to always be on the defensive, here. I happen to have differing views on the strip that usually represent a minority opinion, but the majority is always threatened by my comments. Wierd?

I would imagine the purpose of this board is to be a free forum for all of us to express and share differing viewpoints so that, in its entirety each day, it would provide the casual reader a straightforward report on overall sentiment – the good, the bad and the ugly. Obviously, humor goes a long way when the strip disappoints and THANKFULLY their are some very funny people here.

Respect and polity cut both ways, Morrow.

Jeff, we should always try to be polite & respectfully even if we feel others are not. (you know, two wrongs don’t make a right). I’ve always felt that I’ve tried to be respectful to everyone even if I disagree with them. Sorry if you feel I don’t but that’s your opinion and your entitled to it.

    Cheers.

Forgive me for my rambling on, but a surprising irony just occurred to me – I’ve been busting my hump over the last two years on endless projects related to Dick Tracy, all on a volunteer basis and all for YOUR benefit and for the benefit of the other thousands of DT fans across the globe, yet I’m the one who constantly gets booed and beat on the hardest here when I share my own views and opinions. You all may wonder why DL and other people close to the strip don’t join in here? Its torturous at times.

I don’t perform this volunteer work for my own benefit and health, you know. I do it for YOU and for your children and your grandchildren and, perhaps, even your grandchild’s grandchildren. The legacy of the canon of Dick Tracy needs to be shared with future generations. Just like the great classic’s, it too must be preserved…the good, the bad and the ugly.

I guess it would be remiss of me not to point out that sometimes I feel this irony gets the best of me and I react somewhat angrily without giving the benefit of consideration that each comment and its writer deserves. I’ll make it a New Year’s Resolution to change this.

Fortunately, LudwigVonDrake, in almost all my work with Matt, he ultimately plays the role of editor, so my poor use of language usually appears correct and proper in their final product.

In every endeavor, somebody’s gotta focus on details. I’m more of a macro guy, myself. Some would consider Matt’s abilities in this instance a valuable skill, I imagine.

BB- We all know you’re a gentleman, so I assumed you would understand that you’re an exception to the norm. Merry Christmas, pal.

Jeff said: “Locher HEARS, bur think his readers suggest squat.’He believes HE knows it all’ “Of course he does dear Sydney If that makes you sleep comfortably tonight.” Jeff, have you and Mattie meeting in the Praetorian Guard common room ever given thought to this scenario. Locher blows his nose and without realizing it a waxy residue remains on his nose. Sould someone tell him or let him go through the rest of the day looking rediculous? I’m the kind of guy that prefers to tell him the ‘truth’ to have him avoid ongoing embarrassment. I’m not sure what you and Mattie would do? In the real scenario he is living his DT life with an artistic ‘booger’in his India Ink. In addition his pacing is dreadfully poor. Mattie in defensive mode tries to fool the board (‘building up suspense’) but as others chuckle, only he, ends up believing that nonsense. The mushrooming multitude of mistakes. today’s as a small example should give you both pause. Your discussion with him on Diet is a case in point I doubt that you discuss with him matters of REAL weight, like PACING, which most think is dull and boring. Even to move away from the Kilian style of slow build up for 8 WEEKS or more before a crime is committed or to try what worked for Chet. As Tom Dehaven articulated it Chet’s, “ Crime(early), chase and then capture”. That ‘formula’ with varied inovations worked miracles for Gould. It’s one that “died” when Kilian joined the team and all indicaters are that Locher caught the ‘virus’ and is now a carrier. Others can’t help but wonder how you both satisfy yourselves that you are HELPING him or the strip by blindly supporting every fickle “change” fad, he embraces. (eg. Cellphones, lost Hat, dudd character Teevo) His record of success via changing things has been a dismal one. To this date no one knows why he changed all those faces at HQ ? It’s hard to believe with design skills and latent talents this man picked up so little of Gould’s extrodinary winning style. The apparent role of the Praetorian Guard is defend at all costs, never admit flaws and “attack” till they stop, or plead for them to desist. Sorry, really sorry Jeff, we love the Dick called ‘Tracy’ more!

Why do I think that Dich Locher should have designed The Brain (1975)? I thought about it for a few minutes and realized that based on today’s strip The Brain would have had two “stand-ins” to play his “ocharina”. Oooh! Such perfect fingers for the task.

About the office buildings in Naperville looking alike— yes, they kinda do. If you drive through Naperville on the I-88 corridor, most of the buildings look as if they were made from similar blueprints. There are a couple of notable exceptions, the “N” building for instance. This building is designed with a giant “N” on each of its faces. I suppose it’s so you’ll know you’re passing through Naperville.
