Reminds me of a time when I was a little older than Ruthie and answered the phone. My aunt immediately started in about how an aunt (my great-aunt of course) had died that morning. I responded, “ok……” and then she immediately started in about me being uncaring and all kinds of not too nice stuff. She finally stopped talking enough for me to say, “do you want to talk to mom?” Yeah, that went over like a lead balloon…
Anyone remember party lines? One could overhear all kinds of conversations.
O.T.: One night, i was playing around with a shortwave receiver when i came upon what sounded like a radio drama. i soon realised that i was hearing my neighbour’s wireless ’phone (remember those?) The content of the conversation was chilling- a mother & daughter were discussing taking violent revenge on somone for some perceived insult.
i avoided those two like the plague after that, & moved away soon after
The caller will wonder why “Marvella” doesn’t know all the details she has given her unless all her calls are on the same subject. “Marvella” will be glad she missed this call.

Cranky call sounds worse than a tele marker, rather have the crank call.

If Mom thought it was a Crank Call, she wouldn’t be letting Ruthie continue to listen…
