James is just going for the shock effect, like many of us big brothers.

True story, just in time for Halloween.

Growing up we lived at the end of a dead end street with only one house next to us. (a 10 acre wood lot on the other side.)Our next-door neighbor was a doctor but he was also extremely odd. His wife was nice though, and was friends with my mom. When I was about James and Ruthie’s age, Mom sent my brother and me next door with something she’d baked for our neighbor’s wife. We rang the bell. Mrs. B wasn’t home, but Dr. B answered the door, and took the baked goods. As we were walking away, he called us back and said, ’here’s a surprise for you, but you can’t open it until you get home.’ He handed me a paper sack with something weighty inside. We took off at a run eager to find out what treasure he’d give us. We got home, set the sack on the dining room table and called mom so she could share in our surprise—

She came from the kitchen. We opened the sack and inside it was a skull from a cadaver. ‘Wow! Can we keep it?’ we shouted.

Mom took it away to show Dad later. When he got home, he went with us to give it back. Then he sent us home and stayed behind to talk to the good doctor. Adult me can only imagine the discussion they had. The ‘gift’ was never mentioned again, and a few years later, Dr B and his wife moved away.
