Making a character out of the signature is pretty creative.
Smith ghosted the strip for decades under Bud Fisher’s signature. Only after Fisher’s death did Smith finally get to sign his own name.
The writer/artist is an unseen extra character in a comic strip, never in-panel, but always hovering just out of frame when you ask “Who writes this stuff?” I’m guessing Al Smith wasn’t a postmodernist, but it looks like he knew the score.
