Goose stepping goes back to at least the Franco-Prussian War time. The soldiers would break into it when they passed a reviewing stand or something as a show of virility.
Geese do walk without bending their leading leg, but they don’t lift it high. The reason they don’t bend it is that their legs bend backward, in the opposite direction of a human knee bend.
