One day when I was in college, I was sitting in the 2nd story landing in our dorm. It has windows on both sides and I jumped at the sound of something hitting one of the windows! I ran downstairs to see what it was and found a stunned mockingbird lying on the pavement. I was able to get it to step up onto my finger, and carried it over to some bushes where I set it on a sturdy branch. I stepped away and watched it for a while, not sure what to do next, but luckily it recovered enough to fly away on its own.
I once worked in a totally glass fronted 7-story office building. Really took a toll on the local birds.
Was leaving work one evening and spotted a tiny hummingbird lying on the ground. I realized he had hit the windows and could only hope he was just stunned. I carefully picked him up, held him in my palm, and gently stroked his back. Several co-workers gathered round to observe.
Took a couple of minutes, but li’l bird started to stir and blink eyes…and then suddenly you could literally see the moment he realized he was in a human’s hand. His eyes came wide open and KAPWEENG! he was airborne in a shot.
