A man sits in a man’s chair and gets his hair cut just as he described it whether the barber thinks it’s right or not. Same man sits in a woman’s chair and no matter how well he explains how he wants his hair cut.. she’s gonna cut it how she “thinks” it should be cut. The difference… the man knows that if he does it wrong there’s a good chance of him loosing some teeth, the woman is pretty sure the man will pay her and walk out whether he likes the cut or not.
Decades ago, a (male) friend went to a Haircuttery and was told “you have long hair. I have to charge more” which didn’t make sense to him, because it’s not like she’d have to cut off an inch at a time and it’s more work. But instead of pointing that out, he said “you’d charge me extra on my birthday?” And she said “it’s your birthday? I won’t charge extra.”
$1 for cutting your hair. $?? for knowing how to cut your hair. $?? for the time gaining the experience of cutting hair. $.02 for the inane small talk while cutting your hair. Not to mention taxes, licensing, shop costs, and a curated stack of five year old magazines. In the end, it’s a guy thing.
Forty years ago I got tired of someone going snip-snip, snip-snip, “That’ll be $15 (or more).” I started shaving my head. Much less expensive, much less trouble with hot weather, and I look better than any barber could make me. P.S. Anyone trying to trim my beard is likely to get “trimmed” themselves.
