A friend of mine enjoyed reading “The Hobbit” to his kids, and the kids enjoyed hearing it. After turning Gollum’s tirade against Bilbo Baggins into a sort of family shorthand, the kids started using “Baggins” as a general term for a thievery. (“Hey, who bagginsed the piece of cake I saved in the fridge!?”) Both kids, a couple of years apart, ran afoul of teachers who argued that they were using a nonsense word in essays.
And, being that kind of teacher, they probably didn’t let the kids explain where the term came from & then compliment them on their reading choices, but, then, explain that they should be creative & see what actual words they could find to define the family word, “bagginsed”. Had a few teachers like that m’self.
