This recalls to mind the old comic strip (1933 – 1973), “The Adventures Of Smilin’ Jack.” It had an ethnically-incorrect (?)character named Fat Stuff whose shirt buttons popped off due to his excessive girth. Usually a scrawny chicken was there to catch them.
i would also include a lower shirt button and pants button. I’ve managed to do both this year. Me long johns are all elastic waitbands. Easier than undoing button behind you.
Husband has a good sized stomach – if he ever agrees to go for hernia surgery – it will be considerably smaller and his pants will stay up much easier.

I’ve never owned a union suit and my long john’s do not have buttons.

I think you qualify as a plugger if you just own a set of long johns, (but they gotta be real.. with the flap).

As my father used to say; semi-jokingly, if you are a member of the AFL-CIO you must wear a union suit!

I wore silk long johns (2 pc set) under my ski outfits—light weight but very effective.

Not thermal underwear, that’s a different type of costume.
