Whee. What fun.Dick and Jane were my first readers. Fondly remember the handyman raking leaves and putting potatoes in the burning pile to bake them. I thought it was such a neat thing to do. Never did it, however.
I loved raking the leaf piles for my dogs to jump into. It brought us all so much joy! And it started the breakdown of the leaves. Once the bits and pieces got too small to play in I ran them over with the lawn mower letting the nutrients back into the yard.
When our gardener disappeared some years ago retired, senior husband decided that since he was retired he could mow our grass and deal with our leaves. It took both of us to push the gas mower. When he got an electric mower I had to walk along side and hold up the wire so he did not mow it – and then take over the mowing mid mow as it was too strenuous for him. (And we are only doing a small backyard – front yard is semi-circle driveway).
But fall leaves!! He had a variety of things over the years he bought to clear the leaves – including a vacuum attachment to suck them up – too heavy for either of us. My idea – which worked well – use a snow shovel – shovel them into a bag in a garbage pail and chop them up as I went along with the same shovel so the bag held more. Drag pail when bag full and tied closed to the curb with its handles, turn on side -finish turning over and bag falls out – turn over bag, repeat.
Just hired a new gardener so his crew deals with the grass and will be dealing with the leaves this year – ahhh!
(Last year I noticed that a neighbor across the street had apparently seen my system for dealing with the leaves as he was shoveling them into a bag in his garbage and turning it over in the same way.)

It helps to be the raker, so you know what’s in the leaves, and what isn’t.

So glad to read other’s baked potato remembrances. Such a warm memory of Jake and the kids. Thank you for your memories.
