LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 20 – Sandy Is Avenged

When Elmer Pinchpenny ran from his father’s house, he jumped into his car and started on his way to Millburg. Tonight, because of his quarrel with his father, he felt reckless and drove faster than ever before. He made the turn to the Millburg road at high speed, and just ahead, in the light of his headlights, Elmer saw something that brought a laugh of satisfaction to his lips.

“What th’? he spluttered. “There’s that mongrel. Ah, here’s my chance! This time I’ll make sure.” The figure of the dog did not move. It seemed to be waiting. “Thinks he’s safe, ten feet out of the road,” laughed Elmer. “Ha! Ha! Ha!”

Elmer turned his car from the roadway, water and mud splashing from his wheels as he did so. “Yep. I’d know him anywhere,” chuckled the boy. “Bandaged leg and all. What a chance!” He headed straight for the dog, which was still motionless. Bang! Wham! He struck it. But, of course, it was the figure of the iron dog and not the real Sandy standing there by the roadside.

Elmer flew from the seat. Wheels and fenders were crumpled, glass was broken, tires exploded. Elmer Pinchpenny landed head-first in a bramble bush. When the crash was over, there was nothing left but a few pieces of rubber and metal – and a very sturdy iron dog which looked very much like Sandy – even to the bandage around his left hind leg!

Is this the end of the story? This may seem like justice to some, but frankly, I’m uncomfortable with it. Annie is bright and did good detective work, but taking the punishment into her own hands is a different matter and not really lawful.
