    It’s like if someone scratches your back – first between the shoulder blades, then your lower back, then your right side and your left, then … … perhaps finishing with a big two-handed rub a couple of times up and down and all around.

    These past few months I’ve roomed with someone who has a very itchy service dog. She must have been trained, because she does not bark and doesn’t wag her tail or do other neat things like chase balls. But she’s mangy, and so when you scratch her in the right place her scratch reflex happens. It’s her only overt sign of happiness.
