I remember once when I was about 4, I didn’t like unwrapping. My mother retold me this story…. apparently I had convinced Santa not to wrap anything. Christmas morning, I came down the stairs and despite the tree being laden with toys beneath it, I questioned, “Where are all the presents?” LOL
As I was raised by missionary Catholic sisters because I was unwanted and unloved by my family, I celebrated Christmas in its true sense. It’s a time for remembering the sacrifice God placed on earth to free those that deserve to set in heaven. Has nothing to do with gift giving; as the gift was already given Christmas was a time for remembering that precious gift.
My husband and I, who is a retired physician, taught our children to think more about why Christmas is celebrated — the birth of Jesus — rather than Santa Claus. When the my son and daughter were kids, I emphasized how much fun it is to GIVE, and to see the joy on someone’s face when they are remembered with a gift. I never asked my children to make a “List for Santa.” They were taught to think about ONE present they would like. I mention that my husband is a medical doctor — with his high income, we could have spoiled them with gifts galore (which they did receive from their many relatives and family friends.) But we never wanted them to grow up greedy, spoiled, and overindulged.
For the toddler age group, sometimes holding back toys and giving them out each day after Christmas means that the toys originally received are appreciated that much more.
Little kids, it’s not about what the presents are, it’s all about the fun of opening the present and seeing what’s inside.
When she was Aprils age, one of our Granddaughters loved to help anyone open their presents, be it Christmas or Birthday. She didn’t care about the present inside, she just liked tearing off the wrapping paper.
Opening a present and being surprised by what’s inside is a special treat, aside from the actual gift. You don’t have to be greedy for more stuff to want to do that some more.
I think, like my own kids, she just didn’t want the fun and surprises to end. Reminds me of when my son was in 1st grade, I think. Apparently the kids had been saying Santa wasn’t real. He asked me, “Mom, is there really a Santa Claus?” I said, “Do you want there to be one?” He said, “Yeah, I think I’ll believe in him one more3 year.”
May I remind the snarky that April is barely beyond being a baby. As for the age inappropriate toys, maybe those belong to her siblings. Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah & Happy New Year to all who celebrate.

The older I get, the more I keep asking myself that very question.

It doesn’t take long to become greedy. I’m ashamed that I was no different. I wish l could go back and say “Thank you” instead of “Is this all?”

It sure looks like a lot of little chokeable pieces for a little girl who isn’t yet three.

I always felt cheated because my birthday was just a few days before Christmas. I figured I just got one of my Christmas presents a few day early.
