You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch/You really are a heel/You’re as cuddly as a cactus/And as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch/You’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel
I remember going through that enormous Sears & Roebuck Christmas catalog. Then writing my list. Still catching the Grinch Who Stole Christmas a couple of times during the season. I have the song as my ringtone during the holidays. Folks love it, especially in bars, ha!
Yesterday’s strip mentioned some classic Warner Bros cartoons including the Roadrunner cartoons which were created and mostly directed by Chuck Jones (usually billed as Charles M. Jones). Chuck Jones also directed the first adaption of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. That was in the 1960s when Boris Karloff was still alive and he provided the narration for it.
Another point about Chuck Jones, which I forgot to mention yesterday, was that his second wife Dorothy Weber Jones wrote the “Rick O’ Shea and Hipshot” spoof western strip for several years. Chuck Jones used a sample of this – which paid tribute to his Roadrunner cartoons – in his 1989 autobiography “Chuck Amuck”.
It was a Sunday strip which showed Hipshot and his horse out in the desert with Hipshot thinking “Sure is peaceful out here.” The peace is interrupted when a cloud of dust appears. Hipshot then sees a roadrunner closely followed by a coyote. The chase continues for several panels with the coyote never quite catching the roadrunner. In the last panel, Hipshot enters a saloon while thinking, “That crazy coyote will never catch that roadrunner!” The sign on the saloon says “ACME Saloon – Proprieter C. Jones”.
Love it! Absolutely priceless! Thanks so very much for sharing your heart and memories with us, Mr Bassett. I can always count on your comic strip to bring a smile.

I remember red-and-blue mail boxes, but I also remember when they were olive-drab because of all the surplus paint left over from WWII.

In upstate NY we have grinches that are stealing mail from private mailboxes. We take Santa’s letters straight to the Post Office to avoid the grinch.
