Since she said “little stores”, I’ll believe that they are going to support small, local businesses. That will help people directly. I know it’s hard to avoid corporations, but I at least try to go to companies that treat their employees well. Regardless, while I don’t feel like it’s up to the individual to jump-start the economy, I know Cathy and her mom will give it their best shot.

I am not much of a Black Friday person myself. I might do some shopping at my local bookstores for “Small Business Saturday” or even some online shopping on “Cyber Monday”. But I do a lot of my holiday shopping at the Holiday Market downtown, I find some really nice stuff there, and I’m also helping local businesses. But trampling others to get a new TV? Not my thing.
Black Friday is traditionally the day I stay away from stores. The only ones I’ve ever been to were the ones I was scheduled to work. I was also thankful to be on a register and not on the floor so I missed the fights but witnessed the aftermath in the form of bloody noses, black eyes, scratches on faces, necks and arms, torn clothing, etc. I even had to try to comfort kids who had managed to get a much desired toy only to have some heartless adult – and a stranger at that – rip it from their hands. Black Friday – No Thank You!
The only Black Friday sale I am going to is at the grocery store — they are having good sales today! There are some foods on sale cheap that are good to either freeze or store in the pantry long term.
I will be happy when this ‘black Friday’ stuff is done for the year. I have been inundated with ads for black Friday sales since the first of the month. This is one American thing that I wished has stayed out of Canada. So, why is called “black” anyway? Somehow I missed that. If I do go out this evening it will be to our annual Village Noel (say it with a French accent to get it right or translate it as Christmas Village). It has grown so big that it is no longer held downtown but on our fair grounds. It is village of cedar huts and tents selling Christmas related stuff like foods and handicrafts along with music and other entertainment themed around the fur trapping days. Since it is well below freezing they will have several wood fires going to warm everyone up.
