    I almost never buy a lottery ticket, but the first time that there was a predicted billion dollar payout, some years ago, I bought one, just to participate in the moment. I would have panicked if I had actually won, but I knew exactly how unlikely that was. And I didn’t.

    As I said, I bought a ticket. The clerk looked at me oddly and said, “just one?”

    Yeah, but after taxes, you only get 2 billion. Hardly makes it worth playing at that point.

    The odds- to- payout ratio in the lottery is abysmal. Thousands of tickets may get you $100. The only time it was worth it was when there was a mathematical glitch in the lottery as seen in the movie “Jerry and Marge Go Large” starring Bryan Cranston.
