I was out walking with my two cats one morning when they suddenly sat and froze into little statues. They were staring at a hill across a ravine. After a couple of minutes, I got behind them to follow their line of sight. There was a coyote there, the exact color of the dry grass, which is why I had not noticed it. It looked at me, rolled on its back a couple of times and then went on its way.
Neither cat moved as much as an ear until the coyote was over the horizon. Smart cats!
From then on, if they indicated “bad mojo” in some way, I immediately took them in a different direction. That’s one of the ways we learned to trust each other.
A few years ago, my cat leapt off the bed in the middle of the night. She stood in the middle of the room and growled. I discovered a pack of coyotes was passing by. I have never heard her growl since then or before then. I didn’t even know she could growl. However, she was a stray that I started feeding and I’m guessing she had some experiences.

This is why my cats are indoor cats.

Pippin will either befriend it or confuse it, perhaps both. I would have thought Pippi would try to eat it, but he’s not that brave.

I love the way Pippi just embodies annoyed resignation.
