“Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse” is a chain of upscale restaurants, serving, as you might think, mostly steaks.
The story goes that years ago, a restaurant called Ruth’s, named after its owner, Ruth (of course), had to move, and acquired a place called “Chris Steakhouse”.
Part of the deal was that it had to retain that name (don’t ask me), so Ruth named it “Ruth’s” “Chris Steakhouse”… which has puzzled people for over half a century.
Dan has tried to fabricate a pun incorporating “Ruth’s Chris”, where I guess “Tmas” has something to do with “T-bones” … you can decide for yourself how successfully.
Now I’d appreciate it if anyone can explain the restaurant name on the sign the Grinch is carrying… looks like “Something-H-O(or U?)-C-K-S” … “Shocks”?
Aside: I went to a Ruth’s Chris in San Francisco a little over 20 years ago… some of the family had agreed on it for my Dad’s birthday.
I would have UN-agreed had I realised that my own dinner plus my share of my father’s was going to cost me over $75.
I’ve heard that nowadays an a la carte steak there is around $40-50… plus at least another $20 for a salad and a potato or whatever… and if you go there with an appetizer and wine sort of crowd… you’re looking at why I’m not going back.
The sign looks like the sign for a steak house in a central MA town called Oxford – Chuck’s Steak House. I used to live a couple towns away from there and used to go there many years ago. I live further east, so not sure if it’s still there. Dan is from MA, so maybe he’s been there?

But did the Grinch steal from an Outback Steakhouse or Jack’s Steakhouse instead of a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse?
