Read a story where an American was checking out and screaming that he didn’t like the stay. It was a 500 year old hotel and the person writing said very picturesque. The clerk kept talking in the local language and the American finally paid up and left in disgust. Then the person writing stepped up and the clerk said in perfect English -“And how may I help you sir!” It would be neat, if true.
This is unfortunately a real thing. I do a lot of traveling to south France for business, and it is downright embarrassing how many Americans behave badly.
